Advisories have always played a major role in the culture of Goldendale High School. First in the form of CAPS (Career & Academic Pathways to Success), then, midway through the 2010-11 school year, GHS transitioned to the Navigation 101 program. Navigation 101 is a free Washington State college & career readiness program. With the adoption of the Navigation 101 program came many new and exciting additions to the GHS college & career readiness culture. Student-led conferences were implemented twice yearly as well as weekly 50 minute advisory periods through which paper and online Navigation 101 lessons are completed. Students are paired with an advisor who they remain with all four years. Senior graduation culminating project requirements are also completed in conjunction with Navigation 101. For the 2012 and 2013 school years, GHS was awarded a Navigation 101 grant with which we were able to buy supplies for the program, take students on college & career field trips, provide stipends for the newly created Navigation Leadership Team, pay for additional training for the Navigation coordinator, and fund transportation for students to complete their junior job shadow experiences.
